Health officials in KINOKAWA, Wakayama Prefecture, conducted an inspection at a factory connected to a dietary supplement that may have played a role in five deaths. The facility, operated by a subsidiary of Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co., was targeted due to health concerns linked to the company's supplements containing red yeast rice.
The situation unfolded when complaints about health problems, particularly kidney-related issues, surfaced following the consumption of the supplements. More than 100 individuals were hospitalized, and additional people sought medical attention, prompting a thorough investigation by health authorities. The factory in Wakayama Prefecture took over the production of benikoji, the main ingredient in the supplements, from a previous facility in Osaka that was shut down in February.
The health ministry and Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. have acknowledged that a compound called puberulic acid, derived from blue mold, was found in the batches of supplements causing health problems. This substance, known for its antibacterial properties, is highly toxic and raises concerns about the safety of the dietary supplements. Company officials expressed their regrets and apologized for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing their commitment to addressing the issue diligently and sincerely. Despite ongoing investigations, the company refrained from disclosing specific details about the inspections as they were under scrutiny.
