Assemblymember Matt Haney of California has proposed Assembly Bill 2751, which aims to address the issue of after-hours work communication. The bill would grant employees the right to disconnect from work-related communications outside of their designated work hours.
This legislation stems from the blurring of work boundaries during the pandemic, with many employees now working remotely or on hybrid schedules. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult for workers to establish clear end times for their workday.
Assembly Bill 2751 would apply to both public and private employers, requiring them to allow employees to disconnect from work communications during off hours. However, exceptions would be made for emergencies or scheduling changes.
The bill is currently being reviewed by the Assembly's Committee on Labor and Employment. If it receives a majority vote in the Assembly, it will proceed to the State Senate for further consideration.
