Boebert Dodges a Bullet as Republicans Choose Lopez for Buck's Seat
Colorado Republicans have selected Greg Lopez to serve the remaining term of former Rep. Ken Buck. Lopez has pledged to serve only the remaining six months of Buck's term, meaning he will not challenge Rep. Lauren Boebert in the ongoing GOP primary for a full term.
Lopez's victory was a surprise, as he narrowly defeated Jerry Sonnenberg, a former state lawmaker who had the backing of GOP establishment figures. Given the conservative nature of the district, Lopez is likely to be elected to Congress in June, coinciding with the primary election for a full term.
Boebert had previously stated that she would not seek the nomination, as her selection would have triggered another special election in her current district. She has accused Buck of resigning early to prevent her from running in the 4th congressional district.
Despite facing accusations of "carpetbagging" and struggling to win over voters in the 4th district, Boebert has argued that she is protecting her voters from Democratic spending by running in a more conservative district. She has also secured millions of dollars in federal funding for her old district.
