A Ukrainian navy captain, Captain Dmytro Pletenchuk, has revealed that Russia's presence in the Black Sea has significantly diminished, leaving only one missile ship, the Cyclone warship, a Karakurt-class corvette, in Crimea. Pletenchuk highlighted that the majority of Russia's combat units and carriers of cruise missiles have been relocated, with successful Ukrainian missile and drone strikes targeted at Russia's major Black Sea port in Sevastopol leading to this shift in naval presence.
Following the Ukrainian attacks, a senior UK Royal Navy officer confirmed that a quarter of Russia's Black Sea warships have been either sunk or damaged. The Ukrainian navy reported recent successful strikes on Russia's vessels, such as the large landing ships Yamal and Azov, the spy ship Ivan Khurs, and the Konstantin Olshansky large landing ship, the latter of which was seized from Ukraine during Russia's annexation of Crimea. The UK's defense minister noted that after the recent attacks, the Black Sea Fleet was deemed "functionally inactive," prompting efforts by the Russian navy to improve survival chances for their vessels, seeing a change in leadership from Adm. Viktor Sokolov to Vice Adm. Sergei Pinchuk in response to the string of Ukrainian successes.
