Recently appointed as Ukraine's commander in chief, Oleksandr Syrsky highlighted the significant firepower disadvantage his country faces against Russia's artillery and mortars on the front line, with a ratio of six to one in favor of Russia. The commander expressed that Russia's ongoing offensive operations, along with their superiority in personnel and ammunition, have posed a difficult scenario for Ukraine, leading to a call for increased aid from Western allies.
Syrsky emphasized that although Ukraine has been outgunned in terms of the volume of ammunition fired, they have adapted by focusing on the effective utilization of available weaponry. He mentioned Ukraine's strategic use of high-precision ammunition for targeted strikes on Russian positions from a distance and the deployment of drones to target ships in the Black Sea. Syrsky also noted that despite some territorial losses, Ukraine has managed to reclaim more positions than they have lost, with enemy gains being of mostly tactical significance rather than strategic importance.
In a bid to bolster their defense capabilities, Ukraine is seeking additional air defense equipment and missiles from allies as Russia escalates airstrikes across the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that without swift approval of more aid by Congress, Ukrainian forces might be forced into a gradual retreat. Syrsky emphasized the importance of allowing military units to rotate on the front line to maintain combat readiness and provide soldiers with necessary rest and recovery as they face physical and psychological exhaustion amidst the hostilities.
