Poland has activated its air force after a Russian cruise missile violated its airspace during a missile attack on western Ukraine. The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command detected the missile's entry into Polish space near Oserdów for 39 seconds. Polish and allied aircraft have been deployed, potentially causing increased noise levels in certain areas.
Poland intends to demand an explanation from Moscow. The incident has been reported to NATO allies. Russia has yet to comment on the airspace violation.
Russia has intensified aerial attacks on western Ukraine, including Kyiv and Lviv. On Saturday, 57 missiles and drones were launched, targeting critical infrastructure in Lviv and Kyiv. Infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih and the Odesa region was also hit, marking the largest aerial bombardment of Ukraine's energy system since the war's onset.
Moscow claims the attacks are retaliation for recent strikes within Russia. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has appealed to Western allies for additional air defense systems and ammunition. However, a $60 billion aid package from the US remains pending in Congress.
