Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, has accused Armenia of "distorting history" to justify its decision to distance itself from Moscow. Lavrov's comments come amid growing tensions between the two countries, with Armenia criticizing Russia's response to its border clashes with Azerbaijan and suspending its participation in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that Armenia does not consider itself an ally of Russia in the Ukraine conflict and has sought closer ties with the West. Armenia has canceled military drills with Russia, announced a joint exercise with the US, and ordered air-defense systems from France.
Lavrov has condemned Armenia's actions, accusing the West of attempting to destabilize the South Caucasus region and turn it into a zone of Western influence. He has also suggested that Russia's military failures in Ukraine and its response to Armenia have raised concerns among other CSTO member nations about Russia's ability to protect them.
